Unical Cares is a giving project of Unical Aviation. We’re an aviation company based in the City of Industry and San Bernardino, CA interested in strengthening the communities where we live and work, particularly for those most marginalized.

We are not a foundation. We are the corporate philanthropy arm of the Unical company looking to give and develop relationships with community organizations who are led by those who are most directly impacted by the issues they are trying to address.

Unical’s vision is to serve as a philanthropic leader in the aviation industry and private sector. We place a high priority on our employees, as well as the broader community in which we live and work. We’re committed to doing our part by investing today in education and community services that increase the quality of life for all.
Unical Cares mission is to provide grants to organizations and groups in Southern California that focus on workforce development, education and community organizing.

Unical Cares is seeking authentic relationships with the organizations we support, and are looking to facilitate a smooth and easy application process.

To do this, we offer the following practices:

  1. Multi-year, general operating grants: After the initial year of funding, we are open to discussing multi-year grant arrangements.
  2. Simple, accessible grant reporting: We request simple reporting and evaluations from organizations use as a means to measure the impact of their work.
  3. Opportunity to provide anonymous feedback about the grant-making experience: As a way to continue improving our giving, we welcome your feedback about your experience working with us.
  4. Equity approach: We prioritize funding groups led by those directly impacted by the issues they are trying to address as well as those who have a systems-based approach to their work.

Applications due 11:00 PM PST, February 28th

Purpose of grants: Unical Cares grants provide general operating support to grassroots groups serving primarily San Bernardino County, the city of Pomona and surrounding areas. This funding furthers our grantees’ ability to start or expand their community organizing, workforce development, and education work—with a focus on building leaders and involving more people at the community level in marginalized communities towards economic self-sufficiency.

Grant Amounts:

  • $5,000 for new grantees
  • $5,000- $10,000 for 2017 Unical Cares grantees requesting to renew their grant

Eligible Groups: Unical Cares will consider applications from groups:

  • with budgets under $800,000
  • with a record of success in their community organizing, workforce development, and education work;
  • led by people and communities most directly impacted by the issues they seek to address

Strong preference will be given to organizations that:

  • Lack access to philanthropy, funding, and capacity building/training opportunities;
  • Are neighborhood-based and/or organizing residents of San Bernardino County, the city of Pomona and/or surrounding areas;
  • Are engaged, or plan to engage in, campaigns that win change through legislative advocacy, shifts in culture/public perception, and/or concrete changes in conditions at the local level.
  • Have, or are forming, a strong social justice vision for their organizing efforts that is grounded in their understanding of root causes of oppression.
